Cats are creatures of habit and on most days you know what to expect. If they are indoor babes, then anything to do with basking in the sun and getting spoiled is a.o.k. by them.
All too often, it occurs that folks want to rid themselves of a pet because of behavioral problems. Animals get put to death by the owner, some get given away and some just get thrown out the door by offended owners who are angry that an animal had the nerve to urinate-chew-vomit or other, in their home! Animals are not just a responsibility, they will always be like a small child that you have to look out for!
Most catch on fast because animals only seek to be loved and praised, not yelled at or to be physically punished. It has been proven however, that animals, much like an abused child, will intentionally do things that gets the owners attention. So whether it be for better or worse, if that's the way to get attention, then they do it.
Urinating - whether by need or for attention.
Cats like to be clean!!! They groom themselves several times a day and when thy are sick, they ususally won't.
Much like us, they don't like to urinate over and over again, on previous urine. At least we have a toilet to flush.
It could be unknown to you but perhaps your cat's area carries a scent or to them it is dirty/smelly/unclean. In either of these cases, they will go somewhere where it is clean! Bottom line!
Accidents will happen "IF" their area is unattended. So if one complains about the smell, then what are ya waitin' for? Clean it.
Solutions: While Javex will bleach, possibly remove paint from walls or dye off furnishings, there's somenthing about Javex that attract cats. They'll even roll over the area where they smell the Javex, then turn around and mark it. To use javex as a base cleaner, then use another I'll suggest in the next paragrah, then rinse the area.
Though it is alot of work, a thorough cleaning of pet areas is a definate must. Especially if you have more than one. There are several companies that claim to "cover" the smell, but cleaning it is what you want to do.
Doucan, is a disinfectant company located in Calgary Alberta. Their $20 a gallon - pink cleaner is a phenominal product!! It is diluted with water and lasts and lasts. You won't regret spending the $20.
When SHARE uses this product, we add half water and half of the Doucan Cleaner into a spray bottle.
Spray your area thoroughly and go get a bucket of warm water and a clean rag.
Remove old litter from the boxes and spray heavily with the solution mix. Allow to sit for 5 minutes while you go back to the area where the box was located and wash the presprayed area.
Another great cleaner that cats don't usually want to spray over is Vim's Oxygel "Ocean Spray". This product is also used by SHARE when we can't get into the city to collect more of the Doucan.
The Oxygel "Ocean Spray" contains sea salt and leaves a fresh clean smell. The same mixture is used in preparation, of half water and half product to spray areas that need to be rid of scent or odors.
Now there are several other reasons why a cat "may" urinate in the house.
- If you bring someone new into your home and they sense something about that person that they fear, feel challenged by or simply don't like, odds are they will urinate somewhere other than their regular spot, even if it is clean and smelling peachy. Oddly enough, I'm going to add, that if that happens and you are companions with your cat, trust you cat's instinct!
Solutions: IF your cat is new to your home, let the cat roam freely where it can hide under a counch or somewhere that it feels secure. Don't let family members or friends try and catch it or grab at it. Give it some time.
If your cat doesn't like someone new that you bring in, put it in the bedroom or another area where you know it likes to be.
IF the cat tries to come out, you may choose to ignore it for a period of time, then let it come back out.
If problems persist, then confine your pet until you can figure out what it is that your pet doesn't like about that new person.

- Young children who aren't taught how to be with animals and are allowed to play unattended and poke eyes, pull ears and or their fur, their tales and... well odds are the cat will scratch them. If a child is uneducated on what a cat can and cannot tolerate, then they are of no fun to one or the other. The pet will hide and go do their business elsewhere in a corner or other more recluse area, where the child can't reach them.
- Bringing new pets into the family could cause your cat to mark or pee in recluse areas if not introduced properly or if favoritism is evident.
- Changes of Kitty Litter Brand Products! Yep that'll do it sometimes too because some kitty litter, carries alot of dust or powdered ingredients that either burn your cat's eyes or nose, or better still stuck on their paws and when they clean themselves, they get sick and will actually vomit collective dust that had remained in their stomaches and they cannot digest.
- Now if your animal is not sick or feverish AND if by chance, these "accidents" gets alot of angry attention by the owner, the pet learns that to get "attention", he must urinate.
As the site builds, you'll find a list of certain actions that are common of animal behavior, what it means AND what you can do to stop it if you are willing to make a change of somekind.
Don't get me wrong! Some pets are outright bad, but some are understandable and CAN be changed if one can take a more broader look at the situation. It's amazing at what can be accomplished and the bond that it establishes between you and your companion.
