Communicate with Your Dog(s)
The best way to begin communication with your dog is to first understand the canine ways - otherwords, know the animal's body language.
Dogs literally "talk" with their bodies and most dogs sole goal in life, is to please their human companions. Taking that into consideration, respect plays a major role in the bonding of a dog and a human companion. What you are willing to observe and understand, will be what forms the base of your friendship.
Spending time is one of the most important ways of getting to know or observe your dog's habits.
"P-a-T-i-E-n-C-e" and an open mind are what's going to be the key to observing your dog in a perspective that will teach the both of you, each other's boundaries and to respect them.
By observing your dog's habits, you will begin to understand a bit about your dog's character and how to communicate with him. Dogs (similar to people) have certain signs of body language that will help you recognize their emotions, responses and character traits.
Body Language Signs will give you an idea on how to approach communicating.
IE: when your dog's hair stands up on the back of his neck, you know he is angry and is willing to attack an oncomer, a passing animal etc...
By retaining your pet during these signs, not only protects another but it also teaches you your dog's likes and dislikes, while showing the dog what you will tolerate and won't tolerate.
In the future, when recognizing this body sign, you will immediately know what to do and give a "no" command.
PL. NOTE: that once you get to know your dog and vice versa, body signs of hair rising, is sometimes, your first clue that your dog senses something that's not right, some bad thoughts towards you, your home or even your family, so once you get to know your dog, also learn to trust your companion's instincts. They serve in honor.

One Word Commands: While this is somewhat related to tips on training, it is also a way of communicating with your dog. Once the dog has learned several one word commands, you may give him two commands, while allowing a pause in between.
IE: if the dog is doing something you disapprove of, the command may be something like "No - House", otherwords "stop what you are doing and go home".
Once the dog has learned the command "no" and the command "house", he will put the two commands together and follow suit with the actions.
This gradual method of communicating is less confusing for the dog and the dog, knowing precisely what you expect, will oblige, making communication and the relationship between you and the pet, more enriching.
