Dash and Dangers for Strays

Dash and Dangers for Strays
Within a short period of time after being removed from our care, both were dead before the age of two yrs old! Please read their story!
Read about Dangers for StraysMeet Baby Dash and his Brother Flash, sitting calmly on one of the "decorations" about my yard, made for animals to lounge - I mean, to decorate in an old rustic - western settings.
Both black and white strays were born in the wild to a momma cat (pic below) who fled her over populated home - to give birth.
As you can see by the pic, both brothers were well groomed, plump and healthy thanks to having a home with AASK Society's Shelter. (then called S.H.A.R.E. "shelters house animals rural and elsewhere)
Our dear Flash was last seen late September 2005, after losing our shelters in a court case, he was too fast and too smart for us to catch in our subtle and non aggressive traps. Neither Flash or Dash had any intentions of leaving the one place where they found safety.
To our knowledge, both Flash and Dash, kept returning to the little house, attempting to enter the porch via the special window that I put in place for the strays to enter.
This window was their portal to survival and they had used it faithfully since May 2004, when they were abandoned by their momma cat, who was ready to mate again. Both male kittens were approximately 7-8 weeks old at the time and both were named for their ability to run like the wind!!!
The man (an aggressive cat hater) who was working on the house after our loss, was seen throwing stones and large objects at the cats, to deter them from attempting to use the side entry.
Dash was severely injured due to the man's actions and both hesitantly kept returning to the ONLY HOME they'd known, in spite of aggressive attacks on the tiny felines. (Clavimox was put in Dash's food to help him heal)
I returned every day to feed them and tried to lure them away from the house, to a home across the street.
Because of Dash's injury he was limping on 3 legs and became more fearful of people. Even me!... almost erasing a year's work at befriending the little guys.
I then built an outdoor shelter for the brothers to use (seen below) and asked permission to place the shelter in the yard of the home on an angle across the street from the old house, hoping to make it easier to lure the brothers away from the old house. Flash was trapped by neighbors shortly after, due to their dislike of AASK Society and to rid themselves of our presence on their street. (Teddy #358)
What a truly sad loss of our sweet babe -Flash. Sept/05
Dash eventually followed me to "this" side of the village during the winter when he got too cold, but kept returning to the only place he knew and was comfortable in his surroundings and felt safe"r" in his shelter. I felt a bit more confident of his safety, knowing that he was on property where he was accepted and the fact that his shelter was well made and insulated.
Every time Dash came over to this side, he was intimidated by 2 known strays near the new house here. Dash being a timid soul and accustomed to being around the crew and his brother, would easily scare and run back to the other side of town, which hindered catching him in my traps. He was a loner and stuck close to the house where I had placed his shelter. The homeowner had told me that he liked to run on top of the garage roof and was no problem to anyone. (except his neighbors - Teddy #358)
Please notice the writing on the wood of Dash's shelter. It says "This animal is sighted for trapping to be brought into the shelter. Thank you for your patience". And two phone numbers were inscribed, in case there was ever a problem. We NEVER got a phone call and it's not as if folks don't know where we are.
Befriend Strays Befriend Strays The last day I saw Dash, the neighbors, Teddy #358 saw me there - and felt they had some right to call the Police on me for being on their street! When the police could do nothing, Dash suddenly "disappeared" within 48 hours - we all believe that to be rid of seeing me there, that that was the end of Dash - but not me. View over 300 pictures and legal documents of what the shelter has been through, please click here.
To have lost such beautiful characters due to malice intent, is not something we accept very well. Neither animal appears to have reached the age of two years old.... When I confronted Teddy #358, they smirked and when asking the homeowner where Dash's shelter was located, he said "Maybe he moved on" and looked down.
After almost two years, animals like this do not "move on". Animals like this who come when called - do not move on! Knowing both brothers like the back of my hand and knowing the difficulty I had in just luring them away from the little house, in spite of them having objects thrown at them and being injured, to just across the street, well - hmmm ... and how Dash would travel across the village, following me, but always returned to the area he considered home.... neither brother "moved on".
Neither brother would have left their "home" unless they were removed or killed and we believe it was both.
To have been scared away from the center of the village (and not the outskirts) they'd be findable again. But neither are anywhere to be found around the entire village. It's been almost 2 months since I last saw my Baby Dash.
My sadness lies in self blame oddly enough, for Flash and Dash wouldn't have been so noticable, "if" I hadn't of built them the shelter and "if" I didn't go put food daily and was eventually seen by Teddy#358 who do not understand what we do and detest us for what we do. (and yes, they are pet owners of a dog and cat but defend their opinion of us by saying that no one should have more than one animal - but they have two!!) And we wonder "what part of "shelter" do they not understand!"

These people when explained what we do and explained how one of the female strays we had coming in and out of the side porch (one of only 4) - had but one kitten during a two year period - responded "Ya Right!" in disbelief. Yes, right! I'd simply close the side window when she went into heat and eventually, she did birth one kitten. Oh well, as they say in french "sont plein merde, qui'll mange la merde les chiens sals"
Alot of love, compassion, heart and soul went into accommodating the two brothers and tending to their needs, both health-wise and emotionally. They were so full of life and were so worth fighting for. We can hardly wait to get back into court, so that people like Teddy#358 can explain to a judge their malice and the vindictiveness they carried out with several actions and plots with others from the local bar. They have made our lives a living hell and brought death and serious losses upon us. We can hardly wait to get back into court and get folks like this on the stand. Find out what the court case is all about.

While the two brothers were actually ferals, kittens born to a stray and never "touched" by a human hand per say, they were not really wild because they were fed twice daily and had a home provided for them, where they were safe and had their own little spots, that were - all their own.
While I never got closer than 3 feet to Flash, I did touch Dash on a few occasions, while I was feeding him and he was eating. He'd back his head away but never actually moved away. He'd watch me closely and when I'd work in the backyard, he'd always be there, chasing a fallen leaf or waiting for something to move in the grass.
Dash had such a gentle soul that he befriended the next door neighbor's cat - a cat that was owned by 4 children.
Dash would wait by the hedge for his buddy to come out and play and play they would! They were awesome to watch! The pic below shows Dash (on the bottom in submission) with his paw gently on his buddy's shoulder, as they played. Beautiful and so innocent to people's ways.
To know the truth about what happened to my little buddies, would certainly be something to attain.
I know what I feel happened to them because I knew the two of them so well and know how they thought, I don't believe they "moved on" - "someone" did "something" to them.
Befriend StraysThe tiny grey and white in front was Dash and Flash's Mom, eating from the garbage with her very pregnant sister beside her... products of a backyard breeder who did not tend to any of their needs. Dash's Mom disappeared last winter - pregnant again and her sister - to our knowledge, was taken out to the Hettorite Colony by her "owners", never to be seen again. Befriend StraysDash (on bottom) playing with the next door neighbor's cat (on top). These guys were friends since they were kittens and faithfully played daily.
They were a blast to watch, frisky and full of life!

Befriend StraysHere Flash looks curiously inside the front window at the shelter, to see what the inside guys were doing.
He lay and bask in the sun and they'd all keep each other company.
Befriend Strays
Dash (up front) and Flash (peeking in) coming into the front porch area via the side window entry during the winter. Cardboard and underlay kept out the cold and kept these little souls warm.
Timid, fearful and just looking to have a home, neither achieved - either thanks to people's malice.

In loving memory of our sweet brothers
Dash and Flash
