More in ArchivesKnown to those who have seen him as: 3 Legs! (but "Big Tat" to us)
The first time I saw this creature in 2001, he impressed me as being quite majestic in his mannerism. He appeared to be in his prime, firm strong body, with muscle toning and his walk showed confidence. He was observant, yet non challant in his regard, safe in his enviroment and king in his domain.
He showed no fear in his eyes, yet he was timid, staying out of hand's reach but still in view.
This large framed male, was good with kittens, showing patience and tenderness in his lumberous ways, while maintaining his stronghold as "top male".
He had not been touched by a human hand for lord knows how long. Been there done that I suppose - didn't want to be hurt again is what I gathered, especially after he was chased and struck down by 2 pick up trucks, his trust for people was diminished.
His outdoor lifestyle and habits were defined further by the fact that he had characteristics of a Rabbit!
Oddly enough, unlike a cat who crouches down close to the ground when needing to observe or deter an unknown situation, Big Tat, sits up on his hind legs, front paws tucked into his chest, so as to get a glance around. His stance lasts anywhere from a minute to five, depending on the nature of the alert and what he decides to do.
On occasion when Big Tat cleans himself, he casually sits on his hind legs and uses his front paws to groom his face and ears -unlike any cat I've ever seen. From his mannerisms, it appears that during his survival on his own, he has spent time amongst rabbits and has acquired some of their traits.
He's quite the amazing dude I tell ya and with many thanks to his lady love, who showed him the way to my house and brought him into my care (even though I had tried for over a year), Big Tat has brought many hours of tenderness, affection and awareness to the similar characteristics felines share with humans.
Now in the shelter as of dec/05, this big ol' boy is clean-clean. He is so appreciative that he "takes care" of his home! He has not tried to tear off the hard plastic from the windows, he has not dumped over his box nor has he missed his shot. His bedding is always neat and he loyally uses his the mini outdoor house I built him, as his "safe spot" to sleep and relax. He knows that was made especially for him and his actions show his appreciation.
He sits in front of the double paned window in the top over hang of the camper, waiting for me to come and has not tried to escape or dart out the door. When I enter the camper now, he jumps up top so he can bump heads with mine and be at my face level. He loves to smell my hair and he rubs his face up against mine as he purrs. I never thought I'd see the day he'd learn to trust again, let alone feel the joy of his embrace. It's awesome!
We're in January 06 as I write this and the weather is mild considering this is southern Alberta, but he knows the sound of the wind when it blows and he knows that he is warm where he is but better yet, he now knows that he has a home - where he is loved.
