What makes our animal's so special? Most of our program animals have been observed and chosen for their loving traits. Many come with background stories, too sad to mention but through loving hands, medical attention and caring, they have learned to trust and are ever so appreciative! Those that have been with us since kittens (or young adult pups) and not adopted out, are those that some may say are not appealing to the eye. Spazz girl, with her gimped tail and tiny frame - Ginger, blind in his right eye - Lucky, his tail surgically partially removed due to gangrene - My Girl, a collie mix with a broken ear, all somewhat handicapped in their own special ways, creating characters that over time have learned to enjoy people's company as opposed to fearing them. Our animals are taught that "the hand" is meant for giving - • giving love, • giving pats, • giving rewards, • giving commands, • giving food or water, • giving toys in play. Not for giving punishment. Sounds, hand commands and time out is the discipline cats and dogs receive at the shelter, learning that people are in control and give a lot when they are good. It is most animal's natures to live for people's approval and most animals are pretty much happy go lucky and simple. Animals will usually only be bad if they are extremely unhappy or sick and if it's the only way they've learned to get attention. Keeping this in mind, helps regulate their characters faster and makes for a more stable animal. Teaching this to others by examples and rules, helps people better understand animals and benefit from what animals have to give back in return. We have simple but strict rules where the animals are concerned, which is why we like to work together with agency workers who attend with their clients, to insure that the rules are instructed and followed. Like children at play accidents happen and in this way, we elude accidents from happening, while assisting people in exploring the limits of the animal's characters - learning their simplicity and gentle ways. A learning experience for all concerned and one that develops an understanding into oneself and the animals in general. Gentility, play and affection bring out the best in all concerned! |
