Why Spay or Neuter Pets? Nov 2005 article by hkh It can be a tad nerve wrecking when there's been an unexpected expansion in the pet category and rather than having one running around, there's anywhere from 4-8 additional bodies occupying your home! As "cute" as the new additions may be, finding new homes for them is yet another bridge to cross. Finding new homes for all those new additions, is not always as easy as it may seem and options narrow down. There are over one million reasons a year as to why spaying and neutering is essential for pets that are cats or dogs. While statistics slowly drop in euthanization numbers, the numbers aren't dropping fast enough and so many loving, caring, confused and afraid pets are still being euthanized -"for no reason!". Unless your pet came straight from it's mother, your pet has a story, a past, a previous owner or owners who could not keep them for one "reason" or another and from one day to the next their lives change dramatically and without understanding - why -. Any good hearted quality breeder can tell you that not all newborns get spoken for and there are the occasional stragglers who don't get placed in new homes. Otherwords, whether an animal is a pure-bred or not, it can still end up in a Shelter or the SPCA, homeless or worse yet - on death row. No matter what the breed, gender or mixed breed, some are given to friends, some end up at the SPCA with a limited life span pending adoption, some are fortunate enough to go to an animal shelter and some end up on the streets. So what are the solutions? Begin by preventing future unwanted births and spay or neuter pet(s) instead!
