"Journal of the Winnebego Experience" In a nutshell, all I can say about all this is that it has truly been a learning experience beyond anything I could have imagined. I've learned how to better utilize the sun for heat, how to slope and slant windows to avoid heat from the sun, I've learned that aluminum holds heat worth a damn, why guys love their Duck Tape, how tolerant and loving animals really are, more about myself but most of all, I learned more about human nature. Here is where I share those thoughts and those of daily experiences. Come visit the critters in the Winnebego!
| Recent Entries Bulletin: In spite of having permission to place a shelter for "Dash" on private property and that it was a known fact that he was targeted for trapping, he was trapped by residents and euthanized in May 2006!!!!! Bless his timid, gentle soul! Read Dash's Compelling Story
Was it Dash? Mar 10th It began snowing around 10 p.m and I thought what better way to track Dash than in fresh snow. By the time I did last minute check up in the winnebego and camper, it was about 10:30. The last time I couldn't find Dash for a couple of days, it was because he was hanging around here. When I walked over to the other side of the village, he was following me, so I began making my sound, hoping he is somewhere around here. I walked down the middle of the street and kept looking over my shoulder but I couldn't see anything. I left a bit of food in Dash's outdoor shelter in hopes that it would be he that finds it. I don't like leaving excess food there in case another stray finds it and beats on Dash for territory. Would defeat the purpose. more here...
Cold & Stray Dash is Missing: Mar 10th/06 The last time I saw this gaffer five days ago, I went to feed him around 9:30 p.m. - much later than normally! I went over a block and out to the street corner and did my sound to call him. It took a few minutes, cuz I'd walked back to his house to see if he might have returned, then went back to the corner. I repeated my sound when I heard him calling to me from down the street. He was urgently calling me so I'd see him. I watched him cross a yard and head towards his little house. I walked back to see if he'd made it. I didn't want to disturb him, besides it was rather cold and so was I, so I used my flashlight and shone it towards his entry and saw him eating and I left. more here...
Stray Update: Feb 27/06 - Strays and Safe Houses It's been getting down to -27 and a bit during the night, so I've been feeding Dash around 5-5:30 the latest so he has time to digest, do his business and settle in for the night. I'll be making room for him in the camper. I've just gotten Fred into his new condo, so now I can work on Dash's new accomodations. I pondered trying to get his outside house in the camper and adding a cage front, but I think it's too wide to get in the camper door. more here...
Will Winter End? Feb 25th 06 I keep telling myself that there's just a few more weeks to go to get through winter -am gettin' pooped. Feb has been a funny month weather wise. Chinook winds come in from the west coast bringing warm air (it's so cool to see in the sky, there's literally a streak miles long of blue sky amidst thick columbus grey clouds) and then suddenly during the night, it gets cold and the next day blows in -20 weather. Point is, with the change of hot and cold, there's been moisture from melting snow, 2 small leaks are creating havic from the roof - more here... Feb 20th/06 When I really think of it, it's been an unusually warm winter for southern alberta and then again, with the Tusami(s) the weather has certainly changed across Canada. As unusual as the weather is, I couldn't be more grateful. It was pretty cold the last 4-5 days (a cold snap) a couple of the nights were down to -40 with the wind chill factor and bringing in the litter boxes from the winnebego to clean - refill and lug back out, is no fun in -40 weather. I can't lug buckets of hot water out there either, it only creates steam and the last thing I need is an accident with water when it's this cold out - ...more here. |
