Tears for Dash March 15th/06
I prepared space for Dash in hopes that I'd find the gaffer again.
After tending to him and walking over to the other side of the village every night and purposely building him a doubled shelter, I fear that his fate was met with a wired cage trap and that he met his doom.
Dash has been in my life everyday for 18 months and NEVER has he disappeared, let alone not respond to my call. Sadness and loss of hope is filling my heart. I pray that he is still alive and that those who oppose me didn't purposely trap him out of malice.
Was it Dash? Mar 10th
It began snowing around 10 p.m and I thought what better way to track Dash than in fresh snow. By the time I did last minute check up in the winnebego and camper, it was about 10:30. The last time I couldn't find Dash for a couple of days, it was because he was hanging around here. When I walked over to the other side of the village, he was following me, so I began making my sound, hoping he is somewhere around here. I walked down the middle of the street and kept looking over my shoulder but I couldn't see anything.
I left a bit of food in Dash's outdoor shelter in hopes that it would be he that finds it. I don't like leaving excess food there in case another stray finds it and beats on Dash for territory. Would defeat the purpose. Which is why Dash's disappearance is so odd, as he really hasn't gone very far and is responsive to my call. He eats as soon as I feed him so even if another stray happens by, there is no food to temp them to come back.
Anyhow on my way back from leaving a bit of food in case Dash is still around, I noticed that there were new paw prints on the sidewalk, going one way over to the other side of the village as if I was being followed. They came from the house - straight across to the other side of town where I left food in Dash's shelter.
Chester, the neighbor's cat across the street was outside, so whether or not it was him who decided to follow me over to the other side of the village, I'm not certain, I didn't see anything when I kept looking back. Mind you I was walking in the middle of the street and it is dark on the sidewalk, but the last time Dash was following me, he called out when I made my sound, so I knew right away and doubled back to feed him at the house. (i have a small wooden box with a trap drop door on it that I leave outside here in hopes of catching him here). Last time I walked on the sidewalk and Dash was in the middle of the street. This time, I walked in the middle of the street but was followed along the sidewalk. hmm, then again, the night we spotted him at 11:30, he was hobbling along in the middle of the street, taking breaks every 5-6 hops. I think he prefers the middle of the street so he can keep an eye out for anything that could come at him from the side(s).
All I know is some animal appears to have followed me. I believe that if it was Dash, he would have announced himself!
I'll call Bylaw on Monday to see if he's picked up a small black and white male from Champion. I pray he hasn't and that I find my littel talker here pretty soon so I can bring him in. It's friggin cold outside.

Cold & Stray Dash is Missing: Mar 8th/06
Dash at about a Year OldThe last time I saw this gaffer was four days ago when I went to feed him around 9:30 p.m. - late i know! I went over a block to the street corner and did my sound to call him. He's never far from his house. It took a few minutes, I'd walked back to see if he might have returned, then went back to the corner. I repeated my sound when I heard him calling to me from down the street. He was urgently calling me so I'd see him, he knew my presence meant food. I watched him cross a yard and head towards his little house. I walked back to see if he'd made it. It was rather cold and so was I, so I used my flashlight and shone it towards his entry and saw him eating and I left.
That's been the last time I saw him in four days! I've gone at intervals and no sign of my little talker anywhere!
I'm concerned due to all the trouble caused by opposition last year.
Dash was ever so hard to lure away from the house after we left and his shelter I built is in behind a neighbors who lives beside one of my stronger oppositions. Damn!!!
The ONLY home Dash has ever known, is the little house where he entered and left at random and was fed and had water twice a day. He is not a good outdoor survivor! Just the number of injuries he has suffered since we moved, is proof enough.
